General Description/History

This plant is not strictly speaking a bamboo, despite the name. Plaited bamboo is also known as the ‘Happy Plant, and is one of the most popular Asian pot plants. It is a member of the Dracaena genus, and is related to Happy Leaves, which are colourful leaves used in many floral arrangements these days. This form has variegated leaves, but the colours have been reversed compared to Happy Leaves – this plant has yellow leaf margins with dark green at the leaf centre. Leaves are spear-shaped, about 20 cm long, and there are 1 to 3 borne at the top of each cane. Bunches contain up to 5 canes, which are supple, about a cm in diameter, and plaited together.

Bunches have a long vase life, and are very hardy – no need to refrigerate and will live happily without a preservative.
