Clematis – Potted
Claim this listingGeneral Description/History
Clematis plants are vines, or lianas, with very attractive flowers in spring. They are very popular garden plants. With close to 300 species, this genus is very widespread in both temperate and warm climates, Southern and Northern Hemispheres. Most of the temperate species are deciduous and die back to the woody stems in autumn, while those from warmer climates are evergreen.
There are hundreds of Clematis varieties, with new forms being bred each year. As a result there is a Clematis in just about any colour you could desire, except black. Most flowers have either 4 or 8 petals, although some have 6 and there are multi-petalled varieties as well. Petals can be pointed or rounded, single, double or multi-coloured, plain or tufted. Flower size ranges from 2 to 15 cm in diameter. The centre of each flower contains the tufted anthers and stamens, which can be white, yellow or red.
What to look for
- Plants with a few open flowers and many buds
- Leaves with a glossy green appearance
- Avoid pots with dried, yellow leaves
Flower Care
- Remove the plastic sleeve around the pot.
- Clematis need a well-drained pot: check that the drainage holes at the base of the pot are not clogged.
- Place pots in a well-lit place, ideally in partial (but not full) sun.
- Make sure the pot is not in the sun, as warm roots usually result in a dead Clematis.
- Clematis are climbers and will likely grow beyond the supports in the pot – place pots near a trellis or other structure that the vine can attach to.
- Check pots daily and water if dry.
- Cut plant back as foliage begins to die off in autumn. This is an ideal time to re-pot and plant in the garden. It is important to choose the right spot – the plant should get morning sun, but the soil should be shaded.
