Fuchsia – Potted
Claim this listingGeneral Description/History
A very popular potted or garden plant. There are over 100 species, and over 8000 cultivars as these hardy plants make excellent pot plants or hanging baskets. Leaves are commonly lance-shaped, have serrated edges, are dark green and are borne opposite each other. The flowers have a very distinctive teardrop shape when in bud, and 4 long sepals open and bend upwards to reveal shorter broader petals. Sepals and petals are often different colours, most commonly the sepals are red and the petals purple. Flower colour varies from white to dark red, purple to blue, or orange to yellow. Long stigmas and styles poke out of the bottom of each open flower. Flowering can be all year round, but is most common in spring, summer and autumn. New hybrids can be double petalled, giving a frilled appearance.
What to look for
- Plants with many buds and a few open flowers
- Fresh, undamaged leaves;
- Avoid plants with brown leaves and very dry potting mix.
Flower Care
- Place in dappled shade, they do not like full sun.
- Water regularly – they will need water every day during hot weather.
- Fuchsias need a well-drained potting mix, so ensure the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot are not clogged.
- Place pot on a saucer so excess water can be retained.
- If in a hanging basket make sure it is one of those with an in-built saucer.
- Misting is a great idea in hot weather.
- Feed with a liquid fertiliser every week during flower formation.
- Cut back after flowering – cut about a third off each branch.
