General Description/History

There are about 40 species in the genus Dracaena, several of which are grown as indoor plants. Although many Dracaenas look like palm trees, they are more closely related to lilies. Happy leaves are cut from D. fragrans cv. Massangeana, a popular indoor and garden plant due to the bright yellow stripes that run down the green, spear-shaped leaves. The leaves are long, up to 1 metre in length, with a sharp tip and undulating edges. Leaves are usually sold in bunches.

Interesting Facts about this Flower

The name Dracaena is derived from the Greek word “drakaina”, meaning a female dragon. This is because the resinous red gum produced when the stem is cut is supposed to resemble dragon’s blood.

Happy leaves or plants are called ‘happy’ because they are thought to bring luck to the household. If the plants flower it is also considered to be a sign of good fortune.
