General Description

  • a medium sized cauliflower with a pale violet to dark purple head
  • the purple colour comes from anthocyanins in the head that develop under direct sunlight and cool temperatures
  • a number of varieties of purple cauli can be found, including Sicilian Violet (Sicilia violetto), ‘Violet Queen’, ‘Graffiti F1’ and ‘Purple Cape’
  • Sicilian violet is an old southern Italian variety that has an excellent taste
  • florets can turn green with cooking as the purple colour leaches into the cooking water
  • has a sweet mild taste
