General Description/History

  • A very popular woody perennial herb
  • Native to the Mediterranean region
  • The name comes from the Latin, meaning ‘dew of the sea’
  • Legend has it that the Virgin Mary spread her blue cloak over a white flowering rosemary bush. The flowers turned the same colour as her cloak, and from then on the bush was referred to as the “Rose of Mary”.
  • Sold as branches or loose leaves
  • Leaves are small, lance-shaped, 2 to 4 cm long and 2 to 5 mm wide, green on top and white underneath
  • Leaves have short dense hairs
  • Flowers can be white, pink, purple or blue
  • Very popular in Mediterranean cuisine
  • In Australia, a sprig of rosemary is worn on Anzac Day (25th April) as a symbol of remembrance
