- A very popular woody perennial herb
- Native to the Mediterranean region
- The name comes from the Latin, meaning ‘dew of the sea’
- Legend has it that the Virgin Mary spread her blue cloak over a white flowering rosemary bush. The flowers turned the same colour as her cloak, and from then on the bush was referred to as the “Rose of Mary”.
- Sold as branches or loose leaves
- Leaves are small, lance-shaped, 2 to 4 cm long and 2 to 5 mm wide, green on top and white underneath
- Leaves have short dense hairs
- Flowers can be white, pink, purple or blue
- Very popular in Mediterranean cuisine
- In Australia, a sprig of rosemary is worn on Anzac Day (25th April) as a symbol of remembrance
