Water Lily
Claim this listingGeneral Description/History
These short-stemmed flowers are truly spectacular and are rarely seen as cut flowers. They grow in submerged soil, with the leaves and flowers floating on the water surface. Water lilies are divided into two main categories: hardy and tropical. Hardy water lilies bloom only during the day, but tropical water lilies can bloom either day or night. There are hundreds of different varieties, with flower colours ranging from white to cream, yellow to apricot, pink to red, and blue to mauve. There are miniature varieties with flowers that are about 6 cm in diameter and larger forms that bear flowers up to 15 cm in diameter. Flowers typically have 2 or more rings of petals, each made up of 10 to 15 waxy, pointed petals. The centre of each flower is often yellow, and contains the filamentous stamens and styles. Many varieties are fragrant. Stems are short.
