General Description/History

Most commonly known as calla lilies, these flowers come in pink to red, white to pale cream, yellow, purple-black and orange. Each fleshy, green, hollow stem holds one flower that unfurls as they open. Leaves are large, flattened and often speckelled with white flecks. Most callas are small, 30 to 60 cm, but some varieties such as the large green and white ‘Green Goddess’ can have stems up to 100 cm in length.

Callas have become extremely popular in the past few years due in no small part to the new colours that have been released from breeding programs in Holland (H&B), NZ (Crop & Food Research), and Asia.

Callas are grown under cover in glass or polyhouses. Most are grown in Victoria, NSW and QLD.
